The Appeal by John Grisham

4.0

In the small town of Bowmore, MS, a chemical company has spent years illegally dumping toxic waste, which has leached into the groundwater and contaiminated the town's water supply. The result? A cancer cluster, with cancer rates 12-15 times the nation average, the nickname "Cancer County", and the understandable economical fallout. The law firm of Payton and Payton represents Jeanneatte Baker, who has lost both her husband and child to cancer, in a lawsuit against Krane Chemical. Jeanneatte Baker wins, and Krane is hit for $41 million in damages.

Of course, Krane appeals the verdict in the Mississippi State Supreme Court, and here is where the bulk of the story lies, with the consequences of having Supreme Court Judges who are elected, rather than appointed.

A fast-paced, fantastic read- the story is gritty, and the ending is controversial, to say the least. Michael Beck is a fabulous narrator- such a treat to listen to! I was very disappointed when the book ended.
