Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy
5.0

Lucy Grealy had a rare form of cancer as a child that left her with an extreme facial disfigurement. She more than 30 reconstructive surgeries that left her body scarred, but never gave her the face she wanted, or society expected.

She was a poet, a writer, and a teacher. She was very intelligent but felt she was ugly, and it was the right of people were going to make fun of her.

From her autobiography:
"Beauty, as defined by society at large, seemed to be only about who was best at looking like everyone else."

She struggled throughout her life and died at the age of 39 from a heroin overdose.
