Holly Jackson's another well crafted investigative mystery with dark & twisted characters (。・ω・。)ノ♡
Pick it if you want to read a true crime feels - mystery that has so many secrets & lies like landmines with a strong connection factor!
The story starts off from a very uncomfortable Bel's point of view. She has been under the shadow of her mother's disappearance for the past six years. Now it's being centred staged through a tv show crew from london for the whole world to see. We get to slowly see the present characters of Price's family & their relationship dynamics with each other.
At that point I actually got confused to remember so many personality details & their behaviour, I sometimes kept going back in pages to get a hold of a particular person in the story. But I eventually got a hold & the story slowly builds. It doesn't rush to reveal anything that can give the readers a chance to guess.
You can never under estimate the strength of a mother, both emotionally & physically. And the hold they can have over their children is really so strong, it is to an extent it can either turn out to be equally terrifying & affectionate.
Rachel Prince's story proves that point. You see her, get to know here from Bel's eyes & you get to know her for who she is & for her children.
As the story is from Bel's view, you practically travel along with her through her doubts, insecurities & those harsh (yet fun) banter she uses to stay away from people.
Ash Maddox is like a fresh air in Bel's world; how hard she tries to stay away from him he just blows through her life as a breeze. But I didn't feel the chemistry there. They had a great friendship though.
Everyone in price's family has something buried & wants that to stay hidden. How they all tackle that & where they end up in Rachel's new version after 16 years of hell is the crux of the story.
I felt this was a mystery book that delves into a desperate mom & a child who didn't know that Mom. In this backdrop this book focuses on multiple things but nothing felt strong enough to beat that emotional connection they bring.
