I can honestly say that I disliked most of Farsala. Even the people the readers were supposed to like were fundamentally dislikeable. The only ones I really sympathized with were Jiaan and Merahb. And that's because I couldn't find much wrong with them. But they managed not to be Mary Sueish, or whatever Mary Sues are called if they're male. (Wikipedia tells me Marty Stu is the correct term.)
The Hrum were better, really. I didn't really hate them at all until they shot Merahb in cold blood. And even then the Farsalans had way more offenses on their hands just the same. I guess it was a little like having a family of evil jerks. But you have to defend them just the same. But I didn't sympathize with any of the primary protagonists except Jiaan. So I don't think this book was much of a success.
