Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

5.0

“I remember these things clearly because that was how my mother loved you, not through white lies and constant verbal affirmation, but in subtle observations of what brought you joy, pocketed away to make you feel comforted and cared for without even realizing it.”

This book is a heartbreaking yet beautiful memoir that follows Michelle's life with a focus on her relationship with her mother and her mother's battle with cancer. It reminds us to not take things for granted and to appreciate the little things in life. I loved the way that food brought them together and is what strengthened their bond, even when Michelle's mother passed. It explored the complicated relationship between Michelle, her culture, her family, and the world around her. Reading how everyone around her considered her to be a chaotic and cruel child was interesting and I love how Michelle was (mostly) unapologetically herself. The guilt that she experienced after her mothers passing was heartbreaking and her caregiver burnout is such an important topic for discussion. Reading how Michelle went from trying to fit in and bury her culture as a child to how she grew into herself and was proud of her culture and wanted to embrace it was such a beautiful journey.

Everyone should read this book as there are so many relatable and important life lessons scattered throughout it. It will also leave you inspired by how food brings us together and may just inspire you to reconnect with your culture (or discover new ones) through flavorful food and family.
