Mary Francis Nolan, the tree that grows in Brooklyn. She is the Tree of Heaven that heralds the immigrants — that grows in a cemented Brooklyn courtyard, that survives despite being a sickly young sapling, that endures even after being chopped down and its stump burned. And still, she grows.
