The Conspiracy of Us by Maggie Hall
3.0
3.25 or 3.5 / 5 stars
So this was a lot of fun. I found myself really engaged with the story. This was basically non-stop action, so I really wanted to know what was going to happen next. Plus, the narrator of this audiobook is one of my favorite audiobook narrators, so that made me like the audiobook even more. I really like history, so it was fascinating to read about all these ancient people and civilizations and how Maggie Hall integrated their stories into the modern story.
I liked the main character, but I feel like she can be even more than what she was portrayed in this book. She has a lot of potential to be a kick-ass main character, but I feel like she wasn't allowed to fully shine because the romance and relationships almost overshadowed her character. Which leads me to a few things that I did not like about this book.
First, HOLY INSTA-LOVE. It was so painful to hear her talking about how she felt about this guy barely 4 or 5 chapters into the book. It was cringe and just, ughh. And on top of that, there is definitely the setup for a love triangle as well. I mean, I know this book came out 3 years ago but come on. So cliché and boring to read. Despite all that, I do have a favorite guy, but I need to know a little more before I pick a side.
Also, I had a really hard time suspending my disbelief to read this book. Avery, the main character, finds out this crazy secret about her family and she ... accepts it. Basically no questions were asked, she just runs off to Paris with these two guys that she barely knows. And I just don't find that very believable. I also felt like there were moments in this book that were incredibly convenient. So that's not very believable either.
However, I did have a lot of fun reading this book and I will be continuing on with the series. This first book left off on quite the cliffhanger and I'm eager to see what will happen in the next installment. I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves fun, fast-paced YA adventure story. It's definitely reminiscent of National Treasure but in a YA format, and I think it'll end up being a fun one.
