Ru by Kim Thúy

4.0

This was a beautiful book. Told as a series of short vignettes that go back and forth in time, Ru tells the powerful story of a woman, growing up in Vietnam, her experiences under the Communist government, escaping Vietnam as refugees, living in poverty in a Malaysian refugee camp, finding home in Canada, and beyond. The vignettes are haunting, beautiful, and intimate, telling stories of brutality, love, tenderness, horror, devastation, and hope, seamlessly weaving them together in a breathtaking work of literature and lyricism. I was so moved by this work, and so impressed.
