This is one of Dick Francis's earlier novels, but it is excellent. Great plot with interesting twists. The mystery is engaging and believable. The main character's introspection and recognition of his own flaws and mistakes makes it particularly good for me. With that said, I wouldn't say that character "growth" is a driving force of the book. This is a plot-based mystery.
