Doctor Dearest by R.S. Grey
2.0
After falling back in love with RS Grey after HRH and one of my favorites being Hotshot Doc, I was excited to read this one. And was left...disappointed.
I'd loved that Grey's books seemed to avoid the stereotype of controlling/dominating/capital-A Alpha males; while most of the love interests are definitely the steady, sturdy counterparts to the MC's almost manic energy, I was so turned off with a lot of Connor's behavior. The ego and cockiness, I can forgive and even appreciate, but there's a point after the MC and LI initially get together and The Big Thing happens where Connor calls her and doesn't answer. He proceeds to get upset and worried, then acknowledges he's being crazy, and then tells her she needs to make sure she always answers when he calls.
Okay, fine, whatever. They're obsessed with each other!!! It's totally okay!!!!!
Except, it's not. That's the tip of their unhealthy behavior together. I get that they've been into each other a long time and, as a result, there's a lot of pent up sexual energy. Cool, that's fun! But there are several times in the book where they need to talk and one of them avoids the conversation by initiating sex. Then they get mad because some misunderstanding happens because - spoiler alert - they haven't talked about it!!
I love R.S. Grey's books; she writes heroines that are funny, messy, and cute. She's found a formula and character styles - manic pixie dream girl MC and uber-hot, always been secretly in love with MC Love Interest - that work for her. But this one was a solid miss for me. As hard as I tried, I could not get into Connor or their relationship.
However, I'd be very, very into a book about Natalie's brother Noah.
