Freshwater is the second book I’ve read from this author, and it did not let me down. Emezi has such an incredible skill for delivering beautiful and hard-hitting stories in a very short time. This was such a unique exploration of Nigerian spirituality and trauma, and whilst certain parts of this book were incredibly difficult to read (please check trigger warnings), it all came together into such a fascinating character study. I wholeheartedly recommend this book (and would encourage checking out Vivek Oji for anybody who hasn’t yet read it and enjoyed Freshwater).
