The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy by Brigitte Knightley

I went into this without any expectations, but it just didn’t work for me.
There’s barely any world building. I had no idea where we were, what time period it was, or how the magic worked. The story throws around terms without explaining them, and the glossary in the back shouldn’t be doing all the heavy lifting.
The writing was the real dealbreaker. The sentences are clunky, the word choices feel random, and the dialogue tries to be clever but ends up feeling awkward. I kept rereading lines, not because they were deep, but because I couldn’t figure out what was being said.
The characters felt flat. She heals. He kills. That’s pretty much it. No chemistry, no tension, just two tropes shoved together with no spark.
I gave up when I realized I was forcing myself to keep going.
