The Blood of Flowers
by Anita Amirrezvani
An intriguing novel set far away and long ago. When I read the author's note says the narrator is unnamed to honor the unnamed women who knotted rugs, I was surprised because I'd not noticed she had no name. She is an endearing character with a lot to learn. And learn she does. Her struggles between independence and obedience, between rashness and boldness keep the plot moving.
Though there are a few predictable moments in the plot, it frequently surprises. I especially appreciated the interspersing of the traditional tales to enrich the action. The rags to riches journey was anything but linear and certainly not guaranteed.
