Gallant was a good book, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression. I listened to the audiobook version, so it’s possible the pacing felt different than in print, but by the time I fully understood what the stakes were, it felt like it was much later in the story than it should’ve been. For a while, it just felt like the main character was settling into a mysterious house where people didn’t like her and she could see ghosts, and not much more than that.
That said, there were moments I really liked. The ending made me sad, especially what happens with the other relative in the house. That moment hit harder than I expected.
Still, the book fell kind of in the middle for me. It wasn’t bad at all, it just didn’t stand out. I don’t think I’ll remember most of the plot in six months, maybe just one or two moments.
