The Notebook

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
Read May 2024
The Notebook is a romance about two lovers who never forgot about the summer that changed their lives. A novel about remembrance, loneliness, overcoming, and…love. Love that lasts forever.
**spoiler warning**
Positive messages: 2/5
No matter how old you are, love lasts. Stand up for what you believe in and follow your heart. Move on from past hurts but also remember the sweet times in life.
Positive role models: 2/5
Allie is outgoing, sweet, beautiful, and loving. Noah is good at making long-lasting relationships and is very talented at poetry. Although both characters do wrong things outside of marriage, they are very sweet and you fall in love with them more and more. Allie’s mother is kind and tells her to do what she thinks is right. There is some lying, hiding, and keeping things in the dark. Ron is very busy with his work, but tries to make time for his fiance. He is understanding and doesn’t push her.
Drinking, Drugs, and Smoking: 1/5
It is recalled that two characters spent the night talking and getting drunk. Characters drink bourbon.
Language: 1/5
D**n is used.
Violence and Gore: 1/5
A character has a stroke and describes feeling lots of pain.
Sex, Romance, and Nudity: 4/5
A character looks at herself in the mirror (naked because she is about to take a bath) and comments that she has a beautiful body and round boobs. A character explains that he got serious with a woman and that woman taught him how to touch in the right places and said that they once spent an entire day in bed. There are some brief mentions of sex when characters mention ‘making love’ or ‘being in bed.’ A character mentions how a woman’s nipples are sticking out of her dress and her breasts are outlined because of the rain. A character comments on how she felt aroused sexually. Characters recall making love. I skipped a sexual scene when characters started to kiss passionately, which lasted about three to five pages. Two characters shower together outside of marriage.
What Parents Should Know:
The whole concept of this book was about Allie, who is engaged, but can’t get over her first love. She does inappropriate things and there are some hints at sex. However, if you skip the sexual scene, I think that it is fine for mature teens. Almost no violence—actually I would say 0.2/5 because the only thing, really, is that a character gets a stroke and describes the pain associated with it. There is no real violence, though. There is barely any drinking and language, but there is a lot of sexual and romantic content throughout the novel. A character admires her beauty while naked and comments on her body shape and bobs. There are some sexual hints and references. There is also mention of when a woman’s nipples are sticking out from under her dress and her boobs are very defined because of the rain. There are some comments on a man’s muscles and how there is an awakening of love, which is more of lust than love. I would recommend skipping the page where characters start to kiss passionately, and skip a few after that until the next chapter. Nothing important happens and you can still get the plot of the book without reading the unnecessary sex scene. Two characters shower together outside of marriage. At the end of the book, two characters get in bed together and start unbuttoning but nothing else is said. However, this time they are married. Everything included, this book was basically just about two people coming to love again. There wasn’t much of a plot! I enjoyed it, though. I think that it is a fine read for any mature teenager or adult. I read it in about 2 hours (just a single sitting)!
