Kinda boring ngl. I know we needed time to develop Elorin as a character but it felt like nothing significant really happened until the last quarter of the book.
Elorin as a main character was not particularly interesting either. She was kinda boring and meek. Which is very unfortunate because the biggest part of the book is Elorin learning about the bias and bigotry engrained in her culture and working to turn herself away from it. Which would have been much more compelling if Elorin was not boring and annoying.
I did find the world a little interesting. The politics were compelling towards the end which also just made me wonder why they were not a huge part of the rest of the book. The magic and different species were by far the strongest part of this novel.
Overall, this book sorta emulated my least favorite parts of YA fantasy. But the world was pretty strong, so I might keep reading, I’m not sure.
