The author’s prose felt unintentionally immature and with dated format. It comes off as try hard and cliche—like a high school narrative essay vs a novel. It almost reads like bad YA, except it’s not a YA novel. The story takes forever to get going, spending so much time in the background character development without ever successfully managing to creating a believable relationship between the characters, partially due to a lack of dialogue and long-winded monologues about how the characters feel for each other (telling us vs showing us the characters’ connections). It was a chore to get through.
