I loved the 3rd book in the series, in comparison Obsession Falls was such a disappointment.
Features MC's in their mid to older 30's.
Josiah was the only bright spot in the book and made up for a lot other things. Your grumpy contractor fixing up houses and flipping them to rentals.
Audrey was annoying. She's supposed to be this dog obsessed lover, but she's a total idiot. The dog is untrained and she just keeps making excuses for him. Why let him off the leash if he obviously doesn't fucking listen to you. She does it constantly. And is always surprised he doesn't listen and runs the fuck away.
Her mom has a cat and neither of them are dog friendly, yet Audrey's solution is to have her dog on its leash all the time in the house. Yeah okay. That would never ever work. Especially a larger dog with as much energy as Max has. And this wasn't for a weekend visit to Mom's. This was for a semi-permanent living arrangement.
You could have had Audrey rent the house from Josiah from the beginning. I don't know why we needed this run around except to start off with shitty first impressions of her mom.
The book is way too long for what basic plot happens. And there's not enough spice to make up for the limited plot that's dragged out way too much. There's 2 extremely basic nondescript spicy scenes. Gave the vibes of practically zero flirtatious affection leading up, then in & out and done. The book almost would have been better off without them because they really didn't add anything.
You do get a feeling it's a series starter and is leading up to the next book and the ones to follow, but you don't even get to know the other Haven brothers at all. So the length isn't even due to an extended family introduction. There's only a couple scenes in which a few of the brothers meet up at the local bar. You don't get a lot of big family scenes, meet & greets or dinners for example. You don't even meet the brothers Reese or Theo at all. And the mom is only in one (maybe two) scene with Josiah and doesn't even meet Audrey at all.
The twist was unexpected, but mostly due to the fact some information isn't revealed until right before, so you literally couldn't have guessed it at all leading up to it. And suffers from so little characters being introduced. So your stalker is only one of a few options unless you go for a character completely unknown to every one.
And the dog Max had way too much focus and involvement in the book. Like WAY too much. I get it, the FMC is a shitty irresponsible dog owner who probably shouldn't have such a high energy mutt when she works all day and lives alone and has to pay for doggy daycare. And doesn't care at all for properly training her annoying ass dog. His role drastically should have been cut. I cared about Josiah & Audrey's relationship, not about the stupid dog.
The endingwas such a weird choice. Ending with some weird wedding planning, when Josiah- Mr I hate everyone, is satisfied with having a big involved wedding??? And Audrey who isn't shown to have a single fucking friend in the entire book until she meets her older coworker and hairdresser in town. A smaller family only affair would have been much more appropriate for the pair. And we dont even get to see the wedding or anything fun. The whole planning scene could have been cut and replaced with something much more meaningful that doesnt make Josiah come across as such a simp. Im sure the better HEA content is locked behind the newsletter sign up 🙄
