Ahh, this was a good one. Sure it had its flaws. It was mildly predictable with the usual YA thriller tropes. But, it was entertaining, fast paced, and gripping. I was pulled in for the ride and didn't want to get off.
I became attached to the characters. I loved how fleshed out and human they were. I was rooting for most of them to survive, even despite finding out their secrets. And, the ending, and how things were left with some of them, left me utterly emotional.
Now, when I say it was mildly predictable, I mean that in a good way because that mild predictability lended to the true twists and turns of the story. There were a few shocking moments that I just couldn't predict because of the ones that I could. That's one of my favorite things about YA thrillers, and this one delivered.
There was also a little humor throughout the story. Comic relief, if you will. Another one of my favorite aspects of YA thrillers. Just a little touch that keeps you enthralled while you wait for the big stuff.
Five Survive was satisfying. It marked off all the best YA thriller check boxes. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
