Deadly Class Volume 1: Reagan Youth by Rick Remender

5.0

I bought this graphic novel years ago when I asked my local comic shop employee for recommendations. I don't know why I put it off for so long, I might have just forgotten I had it, but wow the story is so incredibly addicting. I wasn't expected to be blown away by the art either, but there were two spreads in particular that made me really stop and appreciate all the little details.

It's unfortunate that the creators are white men (from my google search), because there are quite a few things I hope get better as the volumes go on... for example the "love interest" MARIA. Lol. Idk why every Latina girl has to be named Maria to underline her "exotic-ness"... she also doesn't seem to be a fully-realized character besides the fact that she likes our protagonist. Same for Saya our other potential "exotic" love interest (she's Japanese)... I'm just hoping for better in the future; I guess I'll see if Remender delivers. Speaking of which, I noticed that Remender is also the writer for Low, which I didn't enjoy at all. I'm super shocked I enjoyed this now that I know this information.
