bigpeng 's review for:
A Study in Drowning
by Ava Reid
Bitch Goodreads just closed on me mid-review - I’m only just a lazy woman don’t make me write this again!!!
Incoherent thoughts:
- I actually loved the first half of the book more than the second?? 100% ppl are correct re: the book being slow to start but I was THERE for the vibes.
- All of the imagery relating to drowning, the power of the sea, slow death/ decay … UGH. So moving. I was out here highlighting my Kobo when the book is going back to the library tomorrow LOL.
“But didn’t all drownings begin with a harmless dribble of water”
- The big build up to the ending didn’t move me as much as it I thought it would, but I also have a stomach ache so maybe that was interfering with my enjoyment.
- Fuck the patriarchy and love you Effy. The way Ava Reid dealt with Effy’s innermost thoughts and anxiety was incredibly well done.
“When men fall into the sea, they drown. When women meet the water, they transform. It becomes vital to ask: is this a metamorphosis, or a homecoming?”
