beththebookdragon 's review for:
Orchards
by Holly Thompson
Not just another "bullying" story...this novel incorporates a Japanese/Jewish-American teen being 'sent away' to her mother's family in rural Japan. The details of life in Japan in general and one small town in particular are wonderful. Characters are well-rounded, even the apparently stereotypical people. The gradual healing and maturing process of our main character is beautifully rendered.
The "free verse" style seems to be a bit of a gimmick, but fits the author's style well.
I kept vacillating between three stars and four, so call this three-and-two-thirds.
A good read for teen girls who like other cultures (especially Japan) and "problem novels."
Read for Books for the Beast conference, 2013.
