The Umbrella Man and Other Stories
by Roald Dahl
This one is a difficult rate. 4 stars for entertainment and writing, 3 for the misogyny. I know, he's a product of his time, but even that argument feels a bit thin as many of these stories, imbued by British classism, have a slightly old-fashioned tone of the 1920s/30s. Still, there were times that I wondered if the sexism was meant to be part of the irony and commentary. So, 4 stars for giving me something to chew on.
My favorite is perhaps the first story in this collection "The Great Automatic Grammatizer," especially as its concerns are still particularly relevant to the 21st century.
I also really enjoyed "Royal Jelly," perhaps because it has a grotesque & [adjective redacted] turn than many of the others in this collection.
