In Limbo by Deb JJ Lee

dark emotional reflective sad medium-paced

3.5

This was definitely the most visually stunning graphic memoir I’ve ever read—done in grayscale, some of the illustrations were so detailed & realistic that I thought they were old photos. Lee takes us through their experiences of high school, starting with freshman year and ending with graduation. They do an incredible job of conveying the EMOTION of each experience—I really FELT what they were going through, which ranges from typical high school loneliness/angst to experiences of microaggressions, racial bullying, suicidality, and abuse from their mother. However, I did feel that all of these experiences were kind of thrown together without much narrative thread tying them together. While absolutely beautiful, this book felt somewhat incomplete to me.
