A Deeper Darkness by J.T. Ellison
3.0

This isn't my usual genre. as much as I like forensic dramas on TV, I tend not to read them, and prefer the young adult genre. but I needed an audio book, there weren't many good YA ones, and this sounded interesting, so I grabbed it. I'm not sorry I did. It wasn't bad. I didn't love the characters, or even care terribly what happened to them, but I didn't hate them either, was curious how things would turn out, and was happy for the pleasant ending some of them got, and sad for the one fake out sort of sad ending someone else got.
I guessed who the killer was the first scene "they" were introduced, but the book took its sweet time getting there, and used lots of red herrings that made me doubt myself occasionally. The characters were very vivid and nuanced. I haven't had to deal with grief a lot, thankfully, so I couldn't relate very well to Sam's brand of crazy, and it drove me nuts how long I had to wait for a full explanation of WHY she was.
But the story was pleasant and engrossing. aside from finding the way the author describe sexual tension, thoughts, etc pretty icky in an indefinable way, I did enjoy the story as a distraction from work. I would consider reading more books by the author in the future, if I needed a beach read or something similarly not pressing, but I certainly won't run out for anymore right away.
