This one was a pleasant surprise. I honestly went into this completely blind. And I'll admit, a few pages in, I was slightly uncertain because I'm not HUGE on witchy stuff, mostly because it can be so overdone. Which obviously was going to be a given with a book called Spells On Wheels, so that's on me. But you know what? Despite that, I actually loved this.
Let's start with the art style. It lived up to my expectations, meaning that it matched the art style on the cover. The colors were vibrant, the characters were detailed, and the backgrounds didn't feel like useless filler. I loved looking at each panel and picking out all the little details. I also love how each character had their own individual style, and Jolene's was definitely my favorite.
Speaking of the characters, Jolene was my favorite in terms of personality as well, but I loved the whole trio. The book is short, but I feel like I really got to know the characters and saw what set them apart from each other, the things that made them unique. None of them annoyed me. Even some of the side characters felt pretty developed. Fun, believable personalities with a wicked fashion sense, humor, and chemistry? Perfection.
And then we've got the plot. For it being a witchy book, it honestly didn't feel cliche to me. And it easily could have. I feel like I'm a lot more critical of witchy stuff because a lot of books fall into the same traps and tropes, but this didn't do that. The plot wasn't difficult to follow and was engaging. I loved watching them uncover the mystery, following leads, with cool settings and enjoyable banter to carry us through. It wrapped up neatly and was very satisfying. I didn’t realize there was a volume two, and I think I need it. I think I also need a physical copy of volume one. Just saying.
Five well-deserved stars.
