was hoping this would build and iterate on the narrative style i liked about the fifth head of cerberus, and... it didn't really? the solipsism here was interesting enough, but it never truly clicked for me, or felt like the novel's separate parts came to illuminate each other in new or surprising ways. maybe i went into this with the wrong expectations after cerberus, but i found it simultaneously too straightforward and too Vibes Only -- leaving me with surprisingly little to interpret or chew on. tbh, i think this book is at its best when it's genuinely spooky. the middle section, "the alchemist", is a mostly self-contained ghost story, related by proxy and slightly out of order; and it's a legitimately compelling core. but mostly, this novel just wasn't really anything? definitely readable, but ultimately quite forgettable, as well
