I was obsessed with Naruto in high school (I wrote fanfiction for it kind of obsessed), but I never actually read the original manga save this first volume. I'm not sure why, probably because there are so many volumes and they were so expensive to me at the time (I mean, they still are) and... yes, library was an option, I'm not sure why I didn't do it.
Anyway, those are a bit of a sentimental read for me. Some months ago, I read a bit of a Naruto fanfiction as a bit of a comfort read and I was sad that I couldn't really read & enjoy any of the "set in the Naruto Universe" stories or AUs that work with changing the storylines (meaning I can only read like Modern Day AU or like something that is completely imagined - likre Regency AU or whatever... not that I seen one of those! I would totally read that though...) just because I don't remember the world well enough!
I didn't feel like re-watching the anime (although I mean, I never finished Shippuden because it wasn't fully out then) so I thought I would give the manga a go. And this was so much fun. There are so much problematic elements however! I'm just putting it out there in case someone took this as me recommending the series. There is some transgressive stuff that is meant to me humorous - Naruto transforming into a sexy naked female version of himself, Sasuke and Naruto accidentally kissing and I mean - this isn't really transgressive - at this point the only female character we have is Sakura and the only thing she is concerned with is romance. The female characters thing is low-key bothering me, because this series is a lot about what each character wants most in life / what is their life goal and the female characters are very romance oriented for sure. I mean, Naruto himself kind of is too, but he has one goal that is above his romantic one and besides (spoilers for who ends up with who for the whole series)he never ends up with Sakura. The girls' romantic goals are stronger than the boys' because as far as I remember, all the girls have it their own way in the end... more or less...
The Naruto-changing-form jutsu is kind of disgusting if you look at it with straight eyes, but my very queer eyes see a potential of reading Naruto as genderfluid character, so I am taking that! Also, I totally forgot that the Naruto-Sasuke kiss happens this early on 😂 I have to say that my SasuNaru shipping heart awakened again 🔥 What can I say, they are such idiots....
So yeah, sorry, this was a bit rambly. It was nice coming back to this and I do hope to keep some sort of pace with going through these. I guess we'll see, at this point I'm really looking forward to reading the next one.
