Alien: Out of the Shadows by Tim Lebbon

3.0

Really enjoyed 95% of this book but I think the inclusion of Ripley actually hurt it and results in one of the worst cases of deus ex machina that I've ever seen. This book takes place 37 years after the events of the film Alien. If you've seen the film Aliens, you know that it takes place 57 years after the events of Alien with Ripley awaking from hyper sleep. Since this book is part of the "official" timeline, it still needs to link up with Aliens. How that is achieved was ridiculous.

As for the rest of the book, it really depends on what kind of fan of the series you are. If Alien is your favorite and you're looking for the survival horror type aspect of that film, you might be disappointed as this book falls more in to the type of story told in Aliens.

It's still worth reading if you're a fan and I'll be checking out the next two books in the trilogy but I was just disappointed with how getting from point A in Alien to point B in Aliens was achieved.
