Half a Lifelong Romance
by Eileen Chang
This the story of a thwarted love between Manzhen and Shijun in 1930-40 Shanghai. After Manzhen's father dies, she finds it necessary to work 3 jobs to support her family. She falls in love with a boy from her day job named Shijun. There are a constant series of misunderstandings, family dynamics, and outside forces that keep the two from getting together. Eventually, they both marry someone else.
This is a fascinating book about Chinese culture of the time. Of course, anyone who follows my reviews will know that I have this "thing" for Asian literature. This book is a current translation from a book written in the 1950s. This is an excellent story that will take you on a psychological roller coaster ride. Loved it!
From MyChineseBooks.com:
"This novel the original title of which was “Eighteen Springs” was published under a pen name and serialized in 1950 in a Shanghai review controlled by the Communist Party. In 1969, Eileen Chang lives in the USA and releases a new version of the novel entitled “Half a lifelong romance.” The novel released in 1950 has a “revolutionary”ending: the characters come together and use their energy to rebuild the country."
