Madame Bovary
by Gustave Flaubert
I’m not sure whether it was the translation, but I found the characters so unlikable and impossible to relate to. They all felt really distant and unknowable and shallow. The descriptions and the plot were well crafted, but overall I was disappointed and a little perplexed as to why this is so highly regarded. The language is good I guess?? Wild that this was influential to Virginia Woolf when her characters’ interiors are so much more developed.
