Okay, wow- this book is haunting. The writing style consists of two friends and former business partners writing to one another through letters during the start of Hitler's rise to power in Germany (though years before WWII officially begins). One friend, a Jewish gallerist, lives in San Fransisco, and the other moves back to Germany. What ensues in these letters is heartbreaking, eye-opening to the brutal ugliness of that time, and showcases a glimpse of what it felt like to be Jewish while all of this is happening.

It's a classic for a reason (and an incredibly quick read) and will surely stick with me for a long time to come.
