Out of all the books which I have read from the Booker Longlist, I think this was one of the most innovative ones.

The book opens with a very conventional scenario - Rachel and Eliza are a couple who have been indecisive about having a baby (well, Eliza is). An incident regarding Rachel makes Eliza decide in favor of having the baby. But this sets of a chain of events which are explored through different philosophical theories. Each chapter starts with the explanation of a thought experiment, not necessarily tying the events of the chapter to the experiment in an obvious way but you do get how it is all connected.

Let's face it, philosophy can be dry. Ward does a brilliant job of explaining philosophy concepts in an interesting way which is understandable for everyone. The connections between the chapters were enthralling to read. The narrators, sometimes repeated, were always interesting cos they all are in different but similar scenarios. It might take time for you to make the connections, but it is worth the extra energy.

I am disappointed that it didn't make it to the shortlist. This is a brilliantly innovative with amazing writing, and I will read whatever Ward writes next.
