A Divided Loyalty by Charles Todd

5.0

The latest in the Ian Rutledge series is, as always, a remarkable and absorbing reading experience. I really zipped through this one, putting in a couple of late nights doing it.

When Ian is asked by a senior detective, Chief Inspector Leslie, to take a case to which he has been assigned, he is unable to do so because he has to appear at a hearing that day. Leslie undertakes the investigation of an unknown woman found dead near some prehistoric stones in the town of Avebury. She had been viciously stabbed and left at the foot of one of them. Leslie’s investigation does not find the killer. Inspector Markham who despises Rutledge assigns him the task of reviewing the investigation. Rutledge sees this as a trap. His letter of resignation is sitting in his superior’s drawer waiting for the right time.
