In Tiffany Jackson's Grown, that Malcolm X quote comes up at one point, about black women being the most vulnerable people in America. While Grown explores the reality of this quote, it is really the power of black women that drives the story. Enchanted is saved at times by her own power, the power of her grandmother, and the action of other black women that save Enchanted.
Grown is at once Enchanted Jones's story and the story of American culture. The story in which men lead lives driven by their own desires, full of accomplices who defend them and their behavior. The story of black women and their voices ignored and silenced. But also the story of women saving one another and pointing with their lives toward justice.
