Girl Made of Stars
by Ashley Herring Blake
Everything about this book was beautiful. Not beautiful in the sense that it was wrapped up and tied with a pretty little bow. Beautiful in the sense that it was raw and real and messy. The story was easy to follow, and the book was an incredibly fast read. There were no crazy plot twists or unrealistic shenanigans. This was the experience of so many girls and women.
The power of female friendships was my favorite part. I don’t think we talk about how important they are. My favorite plot line was the dynamic between Mara and Hannah. Again, just so real.
It’s odd to say, but I don’t think there is enough fiction about the aftermath of rape. Real life doesn’t always play out like the tv shows do. It happens all. the. time. Even to people who seem so happy where they are. This book reflects that.
To believe or not to believe is not so easy, even for the fiercest of feminists, when you’re right in the middle of it all.
