Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

emotional hopeful inspiring reflective medium-paced

5.0

My fiance and I are big fans of Trevor Noah and watch him daily on his show. I bought this book as a present for my fiance but wasn´t sure what the book will be like, I just expected it to be on the funnier side since Trevor is a comedian.
But boy, was I wrong.🙈
While this book does have funny tidbits, it is SO much more. It´s deep, emotional, compelling and makes you rethink and reevalute your entire life.
It´s the story of Trevor growing up being ´born a crime´. He was born to a black mother and a white father in South Africa in the time of apartheid. It´s the story of him growing up hidden away so people don´t arrest his parents. It´s about him growing up trying to find his place in the communities of white, black and colored people. Everyone grows up trying to find themselves but not everyone on this level.
The stories of discriminations, pencil trial in chapter 9 being one of them, made me sick and made me realise even more the importance of educating ourselves and our families so things like that NEVER happen again.
But it´s also the story of the unwavering love of a mother for her child. Patricia Noah is an amazing woman who always put her children first and reading the story you can´t not admire her and everything she has done for Trevor, and later for his younger brother. The abuse she endured from Trevor´s stepdad was horrifying. But despite it all she made sure her children had everything life has to offer and know that they can do and achieve anything they set their mind to.
I don´t wanna give away too much of the story but chapters 4, 5 and 9 are some that stuck with me. Stories aren´t written in an exact chronological order but despite that, the book is easy to read.
And if you can, listen to the AUDIOBOOK, it is BRILLIANT. Trevor did an AMAZING job with it.
