Beautiful Creatures by Margaret Stohl, Kami Garcia
3.0
Following in the footsteps of Twilight and Hunger Games, this "dark" teen book has been developed into a film that's due out in February. It's only ok. The writing is much (much) better than Twilight, and male protagonist makes things interesting, but it's still a little repetitive, not as thoughtful as HG, and the delicious guilty pleasure is somehow lacking. Perhaps it's fairest to say it falls squarely into the YA (Young Adult) category in themes and depth, brushing on bullying, otherness and coming of age, with some rather predictable fantastical twists driving the plot.
I'm a sucker for fantasy series so I might read the next one just to see if it delves darker like Harry Potter did, but right now I have low hopes for its thematic evolution.
