It’s been so long since I’ve read something this refreshingly unique. A dash of magical realism is used to great effect in this book about embracing the ageing process.

This book follows the story of Tilda Finch, a 52-year-old  photographer and divorced mother-of-two who wakes up one morning to discover her pinky finger has disappeared. A trip to the doctor and a series of medical tests reveals a diagnosis of invisibility. Struggling to fully process her new reality and with more body parts disappearing, Tilda attends a support group filled with women at various stages of invisibility, including one who has completely disappeared. But Tilda refuses to accept the disease is incurable. And so begins the battle of her life.

While the plot is fantastically original, it’s not the only thing to love about this book. The characters are beautifully constructed and brimming with life, including possibly one of my favourite romantic literary characters in Patrick.

A story about taking charge of your life and fighting for the reality you want, no matter your age or stage in life. A sometimes hilarious, always poignant story that is relatable and important.
