Timothy Keller: His Spiritual and Intellectual Formation
by Collin Hansen
Interestingly enough, I haven’t explored the works of Tim Keller too much. It seems to be a surprise to many people - since he has played such a crucial role in Evangelicalism. Nonetheless, I believe I’ve only ever read two works by Keller: The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness and a short article Why Plant Churches?
I feel like that positions me to be an interesting reviewer of Hansen’s book because I would assume that most readers would be young Keller cubs or longtime students of Keller. However, not knowing much about Tim Keller, I entered to explore who was this man that so many credit so much.
To paraphrase the author, Tim Keller was like a river that was built from the flows of many tributaries. Keller’s ministry was truly a ministry of synthesis, taking the best of the best and accessibly packaging it for the context he served. This book explores the influences on Keller, more than the influence of Keller - which makes for a very intriguing biography. It answers the question, “What were these many tributaries that made the Keller River?” Getting to see what formed, influenced, encouraged, challenged, and developed this man was a beautiful story in and of itself.
Multiple times, I found myself adding books to my ‘Want to Read’ shelf because they influenced Tim. Collin Hansen is gifted in telling the story of Keller’s Spiritual and Intellectual Formation. If you have any curiosity about how Tim Keller became Tim Keller - Collin Hansen’s work will serve you well.
To steal from the back of the book, “This is the untold story of the people, the books, the lectures, and ultimately the God who formed and shaped the life of Timothy Keller.”
