afainthuman 's review for:
Grace and Glory
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Let me just say that the only thing that makes me happy about this series is the fact that I finished it. It was a slog from start to finish—not just this book, but the others as well.
This book and JLA's other books suffer from regurgitated dialogue and plot lines, "shocking" twists, and a severe lack of knowing how to write teenagers or even for a young adult audience. Hell, she can't write dialogue to save her life. It seems like the only way she can possibly relate to them is throwing in as many pop culture references as possible into literally every page in the books. A few sprinkled here and there is fine, sure. But it bleeds into everything. Trinity's narration is a constant stream of pop culture name drops, from Game of Thrones to Supernatural being mentioned 15 or so times in the last bit of this book alone. And it's grating and vastly Not Witty.
And don't get me started on the "plot twists." JLA needs a lesson in how to lay out clues for her readers to pick up on and foreshadow book events. But all we get is one illogical, out-of-left-field revelation after another.
Please. Make her books stop.
