This book was a letdown in some ways. I enjoyed certain aspects of the retelling in a modern setting, but it felt like a weaker version of something like “A Court of Mist and Fury,” where the “bad guy” is really the good guy, protecting his city from the other people in power and not feeling deserving of the heroine. This book relied on the sexual content to make up for the lack of character development. It’s implied that they get to know each other on a personal level, but it isn’t shown in many meaningful ways. The thing that’s going to tear them apart, tormenting them both individually, feels unfounded and easily remedied through a simply conversation. In the end, I would read this if you’re looking for something erotic with a splash of plot thrown in, but not if you’re looking for equal parts character development and plot.
