About as hard-boiled as you can get. So much, I'm not sure if the author is parodying the character type. I've not read any of that style of detective novel to compare to.
I think a big reason I liked the first novel was that "Hell magic" was kind of a new focus in fantasy for me. The third book, it's not so new now. Kadrey did some interesting stuff with the mythology, though.
