Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell

funny informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

A new favorite nonfiction, and a book that I would recommend to everyone!!! Once again, I was fascinated to read about how language influences society, and ourselves as individuals and as members of different groups or communities.

I really enjoy watching documentaries about cults, I enjoy watching films and tv shows about cults, I even enjoy listening to podcasts about cults. I had never read a book about cults, but I really enjoyed it as well. Now all I need is to see how I feel about fiction books about a cult or cults. Do you have any recs?

I think that most of my enjoyment stemmed from the fact that I was already familiarized with most of the cults analyzed by Montell. However, the author brought up some very interesting aspects that I had not thought about before. Also, I thought it was incredible how the author brought to the analysis other types of communities that we would not necessarily associate with the more conventional idea of cults, but that upon further analysis do have a type of “cultish” vibe to them.
