The plot was great, something new and interesting every single chapter. The writing however... minus almost 2 stars for the phrase "tears streamed down his/her face". Somebody cried every ten pages and it became a freaking joke of how many pages until somebody cries. There are other ways and words to show emotion that Goodkind clearly isn't familiar with.
Otherwise, I had a lot of minor questions that didn't get answered completely, but it was because I wanted more details and backstory than what was needed. If it weren't for the last few pages, this story could have wrapped up to stand on it own. I hear it has 10 more books to it, all with hefty page counts, so even though it was a great story I'm not sure how quickly I will continue the series.
