i don’t know what to say other than wow.
i felt like july and i were on horseback together and we were riding across a frontier of tabooed and misunderstood ideas about female identity. i was holding her waste, caught up in my own anxieties about sexuality, self, and my future. in response and reassurance she responded with a jostle of the reigns and a hardy “hyah,” or more characteristically, something wry and clever.
the book untethered me from traditional notions of intimacy. it terrified me, it reassured me, and best of all, it made me belly laugh which no book has ever made me do.
reading this at 27 was a treat. i look forward to doing so again in my mid-40s.
