The Women by Kristin Hannah

“I wonder if any generation will believe again…It’s hard to see clearly when the world is angry and divided and you’re being lied to.”

I don’t know if my heart has ever ached more for a fictional character; the struggles of Frankie’s post-war life are devastating and heart-wrenching. I don’t remember learning much about the Vietnam War in school aside from the fact that it happened. Even though this is historical fiction, hearing and learning more about this war through this book has been incredibly eye opening and I now have a newfound, much higher respect for the Vietnam veterans. I also realize and recognize how much easier it is to access mental health resources in today’s day and age and how we can sometimes take that for granted. I can’t even begin to imagine the struggles these women (and men) went through not being able to find adequate, professional support in dealing with the traumatic aftermath of their military service.
