Reread. A really strong start to the series, but truthfully stands very well on its own as a complete, punchy, well told story. There are a few small moments where the pacing slows down a bit too much for my taste, but largely the pacing is very good. I last read the book when I was in middle school and I didn’t expect it to hold up to rereading as an adult, but it proved me wrong very successfully. I feel I can’t comment on the characters much because I know my perception of them is formed by much more than just this book alone.
Graphic: Fire/Fire injury
Moderate: Alcoholism, Animal death, Child death, Death, Grief, Death of parent, Murder, and Injury/Injury detail
