What a unique and wonderful story! I absolutely loved the beginning. Learning how Charles met Sophie and reading about their lives together until Sophie turned 11 was the best part. The domestic details and sweetness of the first half of the book was pure coziness and joy.
Once the book reached the middle, it seemed to change quickly into another type of story. Sophie meets Matteo and enters his world on the rooftops. I felt my interest flag during this section of the storyline. Some of it was a little gross and I had to skim a few parts, but I am a sensitive person so that might not be everyone's experience.
Luckily, once I reached the last chapter or two, the story seemed to finally come together in the very best way and I had tears in my eyes at the end. I adore anything with the French language, so the addition of the French atmosphere was lovely.
I don't know why the rooftops adventures weren't as enjoyable to me, but maybe if you're still young, it would be more exciting and fun to read about. All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I'm interested to read more books by this author.
