Batman: Curse of the White Knight #1 by Matt Hollingsworth, Sean Murphy

White Knight was my favorite Batman story last year, and it gave me hope for the future of DC Comics through Black Label since I no longer read the main Batman storyline. It doesn’t seem appealing anymore, and I feel like it relies a lot more on shock value and cheap tricks (the stupid wedding non starter). Naturally, I’m excited to see where Curse of the White Knight Goes, since it has the potential to be what Dark Victory was to The Long Halloween.
I hope this new arc answers what it means for Batman and Joker to live in a post-Napier Gotham, and how will Batman cope without Alfred. So far, it seems like it will address those questions, and that there will be tangible consequences in the story. However, the appearance of Azrael didn’t excite me much. It’s too Knightfall-ly. We’ve seen this before. I’m open to change my mind, and I’ll concede that it makes sense that someone so mentally vulnerable due to religious beliefs could become the perfect manipulable target for Joker who likes to set walking weapons loose, but I wish we see other, more obscure villains reimagined. Also, where’s White Knight’s MVP, Harley Quinn? I also need to see what’s going on with her.
